Where to Stay in Otepää – Why I’d Book Ugandi Hotel Again

I spent way more time than I expected trying to figure out where to stay in Otepää.

For such a small place, the choice is surprisingly frustrating – a lot of options look either very basic, outdated, or just not somewhere I’d actually want to spend a few days.

I went through dozens of listings before I found one place that felt different – Ugandi Hotel. And after staying there, I can say this is the one I’d personally book again.

Why Finding the Right Place to Stay in Otepää Is Not So Obvious

The thing is, Otepää is small. Technically a town, but in reality it feels more like a compact local place with a very limited tourism setup. (After all, only around 2,000 people live there.)

It’s well known in Estonia for its climate – good winters with proper snow and surprisingly nice summers. But that hasn’t really translated into a developed hotel scene. There hasn’t been much outside investment here, which you feel immediately when you start looking for accommodation.

Most of what you find is privately owned and built on a smaller scale. Because of that, the standard varies a lot, and many places feel either very basic or simply not updated. They do the job, but they are not necessarily places you choose because you really want to stay there.

And that’s where the difficulty begins.

When you start looking at where to stay in Otepää, you quickly realize there are not that many seriously strong options. But finding one place that feels modern, beautiful, and really comfortable makes a huge difference – and can easily become part of the reason to come here, not just in winter but in other seasons too.

Why Ugandi Hotel Was My Choice (& Why It Can Be Yours Too)

I went to Otepää for a quiet off-season break from Tallinn, so for me the place I stayed at actually mattered. I didn’t want something where I would just come back to sleep.

I wanted to go somewhere deeper into the Estonian countryside, take a break from everyday worries, and at the same time be in the middle of nature, but still have easy access to comfortable and exquisite accommodation where I could fully relax, and also eat really well, almost like being at mom’s house.

Ugandi was the only place that caught my attention straight away for this kind of trip. It looked modern, more thought-through, and simply like somewhere I would actually want to spend time in, especially for a slower kind of getaway.

I also liked that it didn’t feel like a typical countryside stay trying to be “cute” or overly traditional. It looked very modern, Nordic in style, and much more in line with what I personally enjoy.

Since this was more of a reset-type getaway for me, I wanted a place where I could just be – not rush around or feel like the place itself was somehow pressing on me and making me want to leave for the day. I wanted to have the option to stay in the hotel if I felt like it, sit somewhere with my inspirational books, have tea, and not feel like I needed to leave in order to feel comfortable.

Ugandi felt like it could give me exactly that, and that’s why I chose it.

🛎️Where to book Ugandi Hotel:

You can book Ugandi hotel either directly on its official website or through Booking.com, depending on which option works best for your stay.

My stay at Ugandi Hotel – what it’s actually like

Room and design

What I liked about all Ugandi’s rooms is that they each had their own mood from the start. And I say “all” because besides the room where my husband and I stayed, I also saw other ones, since the owner who hosted us was kind enough to show me other room types that were not occupied. So I could actually see the difference.

What I noticed is that design uses darker, richer tones (olive green, brown, and muted earthy shades), which make the rooms feel warmer and more comforting rather than heavy. In Estonia, where climate is cold and darker season feels endless, this kind of color combination creates coziness and gives a sense of comfort right from the start.

Beautiful Deluxe room (where we stayed)

In our room (in Deluxe), as well as in the Superior and Premium Double/Twin rooms, walls were done in deep green paneling together with a darker botanical pattern. Brown curtains and matching furniture helped tie the design together. So the room felt more thought-through and looked more visually rich.

I also noticed how the seating area felt properly integrated into the room. Even in smaller rooms, there are still chairs and a small coffee table, which is not only a nice design detail but also a practical addition, especially for people who arrive with a laptop and want to get a bit of work done, or simply sit down with a book and read.

Another thing worth mentioning is the carpet. In the hotel’s photos, I initially thought the floor was tiled, which seemed like a strange choice for rooms in the Estonian climate. But when I came in, I realized that all rooms actually have carpet – thick, warm, and really nice to walk on barefoot.

In general, all the elements in the design work well together, which makes the rooms feel more complete with a luxurious feel.

Bathrooms follow the same idea. In my room, there was a freestanding bathtub, but in other rooms, bathrooms with showers also felt like part of the overall design, not just practical spaces.

Atmosphere

Ugandi doesn’t have the atmosphere of a typical hotel at all. It feels much more like staying in a private house somewhere in the Estonian countryside – cozy, calm, a little tucked away, and very personal. Everything is thought out.

The small scale of the hotel, its family-run feel, and intimate shared spaces make it feel more like being someone’s guest than just another visitor passing through.

There is none of that anonymous hotel mood where people constantly come and go and everything feels slightly detached, even when the place itself is beautiful.

Here, it’s both personal and easy to feel at home. The whole hotel feels lived-in and well taken care of, which makes it very easy to slow down and feel comfortable almost immediately.

Coffee, tea, and Common Space

There is a small common area at Ugandi that works as a cafe and serves breakfast in the mornings, but it doesn’t really feel like one. It feels much more like a dining room in someone’s house, where it is nice to come during the day or in the evening with a cup of coffee or tea and just sit for a while.

You can go there whenever you want, make yourself a hot drink, take some fruit or small snacks left out for guests, and sit down by the big floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the road and spruce trees growing along it.

Near the reception, there is also a small coffee table with blankets, a few magazines, and board games. In the evening, if you are not too tired after a walk (or after being out in the snow if you are visiting in winter), it is easy to imagine wrapping yourself in a blanket, making a hot tea, and spending some time there playing games.

Actually, what I realized during my spring off-season mini getaway to Otepää is that this hotel is ideal for people who love privacy, quiet moments to think, and that slower kind of travel where you don’t need much to feel good. Ugandi has all of that, and it happens very naturally. It really feels like the kind of place made for reset trips like this.

Breakfast Аrea & Food

Breakfast here follows the same idea as the rest of the hotel – it’s about quality and where everything comes from, not just quantity.

There is a proper selection, enough for different types of appetite in the morning, but what I liked most is that most of the food comes from local producers – cheeses from the area, Estonian salmon and honey, and meats that don’t feel like standard supermarket products. The same goes for the bread and bakery, which tasted fresh and properly made.

My husband also appreciated the desserts, which were a nice extra and prepared in-house. Coffee and tea are available too, with a machine you can use as much as you want.

Overall, just like everything else in this hotel, breakfast here is done really well!

Sleep quality

We slept very well here, and for me, that always says more than any design detail, because I travel a lot and often struggle to sleep properly outside my own home.

Mattress was very comfortable, and there were four pillows in the room (two different sizes and densities) which is a great detail since everyone prefers something different, whether softer or firmer. There was also a proper duvet that felt right for the room – warm, but not heavy. The bedding, like towels and really everything else in the room, felt high quality.

What was also important for me is that the room was quiet at night. I was a little worried it might be noisy since the hotel is located right by the road, but that was not the case at all. The whole area is very calm, and extra sound-insulating windows block any additional noise.

Another important point is that аll rooms have proper curtains that block the light well, so even if you visit in summer during the white nights, sleep will not be a problem.

ℹ️One thing to keep in mind is that there is no spa or pool here.
Ugandi is not built around that kind of experience. It’s more about the rooms, design, atmosphere, excellent food, and overall quality of the stay. If having a sauna or spa matters to you, you can still find those in Otepää and around the lake area.

Location – is this a good location to stay in Otepää?

Yes, and in a place like Otepää, location is not something you need to overthink.

Everything is close anyway, and Ugandi Hotel is positioned in a way that makes getting around very easy. You are not going to deal with long distances, traffic, or complicated logistics. Whether you will be driving or just moving around locally, it will all feel straightforward.

At the same time, it’s not noisy or busy. The area around the hotel is quiet (even though the hotel is located directly by the road), which matters more here than being in the exact “center”, because Otepää doesn’t really have a defined, lively center in the way bigger cities in Estonia do.

Parking is simple and free, access is easy too, so you don’t need to plan your days around location.

Overall, it works well as a base for visits in any season and is extremely quiet and convenient.

Unexpected Highlight: Ugandi Resto

I didn’t come here for the restaurant, but it ended up being one of the best parts of the stay. Ugandi Resto is a separate place, just 150 meters from the hotel, yet it still felt like an important part of the whole experience.

Even though it exists as a separate concept, it carries the same spirit as the hotel and feels like a natural continuation of everything the property stands for – the same attention to detail, the same sense of care, and the same feeling that this was created by people who wanted to bring a higher level of dining to Otepää and raise the bar in a place where you would not necessarily expect it.

What makes this restaurant distinctive is that it is not only about what ends up on the plate, but about the standard you feel throughout the entire experience. At the same time, the food itself deserves attention too, especially the way familiar dishes are rethought and elevated through the chef’s creativity and desire to experiment.

And beyond the food, there is also the presentation, atmosphere, and tableware… all chosen with obvious care. This is a place with taste and personality.

Overall, Ugandi Resto became such a strong part of this stay that I wrote a separate article about it – and I’d absolutely recommend coming here even if you’re not staying in Otepää but just passing through!

Who This Hotel is Аctually For (Аnd Who It’s Not)

This hotel is going to be such a great fit if you:

  • appreciate staying in newer, modern places and feel that quality of accommodation shapes the whole getaway
  • care about design, materials, and overall standard of the place where you stay
  • have a taste for good food. Here, what ends up on your plate is not an afterthought because much of it is prepared specifically for guests using local products sourced from nearby farmers and small businesses
  • love silence and real privacy. Ugandi is the kind of place where it feels easy to hide from the world for a while, switch off mentally, and just be in complete quiet
  • want to visit Otepää outside peak ski season. In the off-season (especially in March, April, October, and November), it feels especially amazing because there are barely any people around and you can enjoy outdoors

It’s probably not the best choice if you:

  • are specifically looking for a spa, pool, or sauna on-site
  • expect a social atmosphere, lots of facilities, or entertainment
  • are choosing purely based on price and simply want the cheapest option

👉 This is not a cheap hotel, but also not overly expensive. Especially considering that price reflects what you get: distinctive design, high-quality materials, a home-like feel, carefully sourced food, and a level of comfort that feels quite unusual in such a small place.

If comfort and that feeling of luxury do not matter much to you, then you may not fully appreciate what this hotel offers, and in that case it may feel expensive.

I also think this hotel works for different types of travelers (couples, singles, families) in two situations: either as a quiet off-season getaway from Tallinn, like I did, or as a more special overnight stop if you are driving between Latvia and Estonia and want something much nicer than a random place on the road. Аnd if staying here in spring or autumn, you can also use my guide to Otepää in the off-season to explore the area a bit.

I also forgot to mention that Ugandi Hotel has some of its own products on sale too. You can buy a jar of local honey or sauce to take home or eat later on the road.

I got honey, some pesto, and chili paste – we’ve already tried all of them, and they were very good! If you like homemade products made from carefully selected ingredients, you’ll enjoy these goodies.

Final thoughts

Ugandi felt like the right choice for this trip from the start, but what I liked most is that it didn’t disappoint once I got there. If anything, it felt more complete and more inviting in real life than it ever looked online.
