Where to Travel in Europe in April – 9 Best Places I Visited and Loved

This list of the best places to visit in Europe in April is based on my own travels and places I personally think are especially worth experiencing at this time of year. Every destination here is somewhere I have been myself, and each one made the list for a reason.

Some are perfect for a warm April getaway in Europe, some work better for scenic road trips, and some simply feel at their best during this time of the year. So if you are trying to figure out where to travel in Europe in April, these are the places I would genuinely consider first.

Why I Think April Is One of the Best Times to Travel in Europe

View of a hiltop castle and alpine mountains in a hidden Bavarian village in Аpril on a trip to Germany

From all my travels around Europe in different seasons, April is my favorite month – for many reasons.

First, it’s really the first month after winter when you can travel to almost anywhere in Europe and not be affected by the weather (no flight cancellations or delays related to weather and temperatures feel comfortable almost everywhere). Okay, maybe not the Arctic, where you can still get wet snow, rain, and that awkward transition season that doesn’t feel very comfortable.

But in most other places, the weather is either already ideal (not too hot, not too cold) or at least comfortable enough for travel if you adapt a little.

Second, April is a transitional travel month in many destinations (either just before the season starts or just after a busier period), which means accommodation prices are not outrageous yet (although they are already climbing up). And for people who love road trips, this matters too – car rental prices are lower as well.

And third (this is something I personally love), in many places you can still travel without huge tourist crowds. April is that slower month when many people have already finished their spring break trips (often at the end of March), while others are waiting for summer. So you get more of a sweet spot – destinations already have energy, but are not overwhelmed yet.

Best Places to Visit in Europe in April (based on my Experience)

Emilia-Romagna (with Bologna as a base)

I loved this part of Italy in April. I was there in early April, and while mornings and sunset hours were still a bit chilly at first, the weather got better every day. Daytime was already very comfortable for walking and exploring.

Bologna is one of the most underrated cities in Italy, in my opinion, and is one of the best trips to take in Europe in April for quality city time, amazing food, and easy day trips. It has the beauty and history people go to Italy for, but it feels more local and less overhyped than places like Florence.

You can spend 3-4 days here easily… walk under the long porticoes, explore old streets and piazzas, climb for views, and of course eat extremely well without needing a packed itinerary every hour.

Speaking of food…

It’s worth coming here at least for the food – and you absolutely have to try mortadella, which comes from Bologna. It is simply divine.
box with Bologna-style tortellini in sauce
You also have to try tortellini here – this is where they are truly part of the local identity. So come hungry, because Bologna is not a city for light eating

It also works really well as a base because nearby cities give you a different experience without complicated logistics. I love nearby Modena which is a smaller, elegant city heavily focused on food. Parma has its own atmosphere and culinary identity. So by combining these 3 places in one trip, you get a chance to see different sides of one of Italy’s best regions.

For an easy trip without a car, I’d recommend staying in Bologna and visit Modena and Parma by train.

But going with a car is a much better choice because you can also make stops in Langhirano and visit Prosciutto di Parma zone (ham producers/tastings), Sorbara area for wines, or Spilamberto – one of the key traditional balsamic areas.

If you’ve already been to Florence, Emilia-Romagna also works perfectly as a standalone spring trip.

Where to stay in Bologna in April (my picks)

I’d choose a central and walkable location for a car-free stay, or something easier for parking if you’re doing a road trip.

  • Madame Bologna – I stayed here, nice flat and best location IMO, near the train station
  • Albergo Panorama – very simple, budget-style stay, but in the very center
  • Art Hotel Commercianti – central + good price as for the hotel of this type + private parking option

Granada (with Malaga as an Entry Point, plus Cordoba)

Granada is one of my favorite places in Spain in April. This is when it starts to feel and smell like spring (literally) – trees begin to bloom (there are so many trees here), air changes, and everything looks just so pretty. Alhambra also looks incredible in spring light (still with snow on the Sierra Nevada in the background in the beginning of April).

For me, Granada is the main destination here for an April getaway, but if you are visiting Europe in April from the USA or Canada, then the smart way to do this trip is to fly into Malaga (because it is better connected and cheaper), spend a couple of days in Malaga (if you have been there before and seen all the main highlights, you can check-out some of its hidden gems this time or watch flamenco there) and then build a small Andalusia triangle.

I like to travel by car (renting a car at Malaga’s airport and cinter center is very affordable at this time of the year and parking in Malaga is doable too), but if hiring a car is not comfortable, then it’s easy to go by train or bus.

All of this will help you have a very unique April trip in Spain with Moorish history, beautiful old cities, spring atmosphere, and comfortable temperatures for walking.

You can add Seville too (because April is one of the best months for Seville before the brutal heat) but then the trip becomes much more intense. I’d definitely do that if you plan to allocate at least one week to Spain, but would skip it for anything less than that. If you go, bookmark my post about authentic things to do in Cordoba, which has a lot of tips.

If you get lucky, there still can be snow on the slopes at the beginning of the month

📌Important: book your Alhambra tickets in advance – this is the main reason to come to Granada, and tickets (especially for the Nasrid Palaces) sell out first. Buy only through the official Alhambra ticket site and choose your time carefully, because entry to the Nasrid Palaces is timed.

Where to stay in Granada in April (my picks)

Stay in a central and walkable area – Granada is compact enough for exploring on foot, but the Alhambra is the main point of this trip, so a good location makes everything easier.

  • Casa Miravalle Darro – best location (also on-site parking), convenient for both the historic center and Alhambra
  • Hotel Granada Centro – simple, good-value option in a central location too
  • Pension Castil – basic but the most budget-friendly accommodation in Granada in the center

Tenerife (best in April for Easter week and a warmer spring escape)

April is one of the smartest times to visit Tenerife – especially if you want warmth in Europe, but don’t want peak-season crowds and prices (I am telling you this as someone who now lives in Tenerife for half a year). It’s the first month when tourism starts to slow down after winter, and you can really feel it – the island becomes calmer and in many cases prices soften too.

me walking on the beach in Northern Tenerife in april

My main recommendation, though, is to visit Tenerife during Easter (Semana Santa) at least once. It’s a very unique time to be on the island. Across Tenerife, many towns hold Holy Week processions and ceremonies, with La Laguna especially known for some of the most important and atmospheric processions in the Canary Islands. Although La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz, Adeje, and Arona also hold popular processions.

What makes these processions worth seeing, even if you’re not coming for religious reasons, is the atmosphere… evening processions walk on historic streets with candles, music and a very local, emotional tone that is very different from the beach side of Tenerife.

But beyond Easter events, April is just a great month to be here. In the south of Tenerife, it can already feel like summer during the day – lots of sun, very comfortable temperatures, and strong beach weather. Ocean is still cold after winter, but because air is warm, swimming usually feels much more doable than people expect.

If someone is looking for a place in Europe in April where they can actually get sun and swim, South Tenerife is one of the easiest and most reliable choices.

I have a separate website dedicated to Tenerife with lots of tips. It will help you plan many different trips in April if you decide to go.

Where to stay in Tenerife in April (my picks)

Both south and north are great. But in the south of Tenerife on the April trip you’ll get the warmest weather, best chance for beach time, and easiest swimming conditions.

  • Coral Ocean View – adults-only option in Costa Adeje, good location for a warmer spring stay
  • Ona Los Claveles – good-value apartment-style stay in Los Cristianos, practical for a longer stay
  • Hotel Best Tenerife – classic resort-style option in Playa de las Americas, great base for beach-focused days

Istanbul (A Special April Trip to the Edge of Europe That I Couldn’t Leave Out)

Alright, Istanbul is not directly in Europe, but I couldn’t leave it out because it is such a special place for an April trip. I lived in Istanbul, and April was my favorite month there by far. If someone asked me when to go, this would honestly be my answer without hesitation.

Yes, a big part of it is the weather. April is that sweet spot when the weather is already warm with blue, clear skies, but it is not hot to the point of becoming tiring. You can walk a lot, take ferries, sit outside, spend time by the Bosphorus, visit different neighborhoods, and actually enjoy various places in Istanbul all day long.

But for me, April is not only about the weather. It is also about how special Istanbul feels at this time of the year… this is the month when tulips bloom everywhere and make it look so beautiful! Almond trees are blooming too and there is this soft spring smell in the air from flowers and trees that I still remember.

It is also one of the best times to do all the things that make Istanbul so memorable in the first place. Cruising on the Bosphorus feels especially good in April, then ferries, waterfront walks, mosque courtyards, palace gardens, little streets, neighborhoods on both sides of the city – all of that feels more enjoyable in spring.

So if you add it to your list of spring destinations in Europe and plan it right, I am sure you’ll love it too. Flying here from any part of Europe is so easy and affordable too.

To make planning easier, you should read my posts about Istanbul (I have a lot) and all the other posts about Turkey.

If you want something quick and easy in terms of planning, then start with my top itinerary for Istanbul for 4 days for first timers, and with Istanbul, Cappadoccia and Pamukkale itinerary for an immersive April trip to Turkey.

Where to stay in Istanbul in April (my picks)

For Istanbul in April, I’d stay either in Sultanahmet (because spring is felt there in the best way) or Karakoy, which is stylish, full of life, and with easy ferry access to many locations that are best to visit in Аpril.

  • Hotel Empress Zoe – special character-filled stay in Sultanahmet, best for atmosphere and location
  • Fidelya Boutique Hotel – cheaper central option in Sultanahmet, practical for sightseeing-heavy days
  • The Bank Hotel – nicer polished stay in Karakoy, nice, stylish base with ferries nearby

Madrid + Northern Spain Coast (A Smart April Route With Contrast)

I really like this route for April because it gives two completely different sides of Spain in one trip, and in this month the timing works especially well for both.

First of all, it is really worth visiting Madrid in April because it is that short pre-summer window when walking all day is still comfortable, days are already longer, and there is so much to do. You cаn spend hours outside, moving between neighborhoods, parks, terraces, and museums. In April, that still feels easy, but by May, the heat makes the same days much heavier.

However, the best part of this trip is the northern coast of Spain. You can actually go straight there (fly to Bilbao airport), skipping Madrid, if you find affordable and convenient flights from/to your starting destination.

April is the first month in northern Spain after winter when heavy rain is finally mostly behind you (I spent a lot of time in this part of the country, so I know how much rain it gets in winter and even in March), but landscapes look incredible during this time because of it.

Everything is intensely green (literally every shade of green) and when you combine that with dramatic coastline, small storybook towns, and fishing villages, this is one of the nicest times for a road trip there.

San Sebastian is a great stop in April too. It’s an excellent month there for food, seaside walks, and comfortable time by the water. This is also the time for the Basque cider season, which runs through April and adds to the whole food-focused atmosphere in the region.

Where to stay in Mаdrid in April (my picks)

For this route, I’d stay in northern Atocha rather than somewhere around Sol or Gran Via.

It’s still central enough for sightseeing, but much more practical for arriving, getting to the airport (when arriving and later if picking up a rental car), visiting the Prado/Retiro side, and especially catching a train when you continue to northern Spain.

  • SLEEP’N Atocha – simple, practical, and very well located for this kind of trip
  • Dobo Madrid Palos – more affordable apartment-style stay close to a bus stop and metro station
  • Only YOU Hotel Atocha – the nicest option here, right by the station, with larger rooms, more style, and parking

Bavaria Lakes & Chiemgau (One of the Most Beautiful April Trips in Southern Germany)

When I say Bavaria as an April destination in Europe, I do not mean the whole region. I mean this specific pocket around Tegernsee, Prien am Chiemsee, Aschau im Chiemgau, Bad Endorf, and Unterwössen – one of the most beautiful spring trips in southern Germany once winter starts letting go.

This is exactly when everything turns intensely green again, trees are blooming, days are bright and sunny, and the whole region becomes almost unreal, especially with the snow-capped Bavarian Alps close in the background.

Chiemsee itself is the region’s star, often called the “Bavarian Sea” with wide views, clean water, and interesting places like a copy of Versailles, built by Ludwig II, who admired Louis XIV, the king who built the original in France.

I didn’t even know this little paradise existed until I came to visit my mother, who settled in this part of Bavaria. The first time I stayed here was in April last year, and I ended up spending the whole month in the region. It completely broke my heart in the best way.

Come here for the lakes, but not only for the lakes. Come for the thermal spas too – especially around Bad Endorf, which is known for its thermal waters and wellness culture. Come for the hiking as well. In April, longer alpine trekking routes are still too early to hit, but easy walks and light hikes are very possible, and there are plenty of trails for different fitness levels.

Of course, also stay in traditional Bavarian guesthouses, eat regional food, slow down, and just enjoy being surrounded by lakes, mountain villages, meadows, and fresh air. There are several very pretty villages in the Bavarian Alps here that are absolutely worth seeing, and this area works well both without a car and with one.

You can also buy a regional train pass and move around by train, or rent a car in Munich, spend a couple of days there first, and then turn this into a beautiful road trip toward Salzburg, adding stops in places like Berchtesgaden along the way.

Where to stay Аround Chiemgau in April (my picks)

For this region, I’d stay in a traditional Bavarian guesthouse rather than a regular hotel. That is really part of the experience here.

Malta (A Sunny April Trip That Already Feels Like Summer)

My first trip to Malta happened in late April, and honestly, it was my favorite time. It felt like one of those trips that came at exactly the right time of year.

After months of grey weather in Northern Europe, landing there and seeing that honey-colored stone, blue water, palm trees, little boats here and there, and people already sitting outside in the sun felt so wonderful, like traveling in a perfect summer without the heat.

view of Valletta's historic waterfront in Malta in Аpril

What I liked most about this country in April is that it already feels properly Mediterranean, but without that exhausting summer intensity. You can walk a lot, explore cities, climb stairs, sit by the sea, wander through harbors, and not sweat and cry as you would in summer (even already in May, which is getting hot).

Yes, indeed, you can’t swim yet because the sea is still cold, but Malta is the kind of place where you go to explore at first, and only then for swimming.

Bay with boats in Malta, one of the best places to visit in Europe in Аpril

If you decide to travel to this part of Europe in April, I really recommend booking this full-day tour that covers the highlights of both Malta and Gozo. It takes you around the island in one day with stops in places like Marsaxlokk, Mdina, and Dingli Cliffs. It was the best way to properly get to know the island.

Where to stay in Malta in April (my picks)

For Malta in April, I’d personally stay either in Valletta or Sliema.

Valletta is more special, especially for first trips and for history with architecture, and beautiful evening walks right outside your door. Sliema is more practical with a wider hotel choice and easier seafront walks.

  • Palais Le Brun – the most beautiful option here, set in a restored 17th-century baroque palace in Valletta
  • BOCO Boutique – cheap beautiful hotel in Cospicua (I stayed here) with easy access to Valletta by ferry
  • 1926 Le Soleil – good-value option in Sliema with a spa

Porto + Nearby Historic Towns (One of the Cheapest April Trips in Portugal)

I was in Porto in April too (from the first part of the month into the middle of it) and for me, this was actually a really good time to go, mostly because of the weather.

It felt like that first proper month when the long wetter period was already easing off. We did get a bit of rain, but not much and we also had plenty of sun – a lot more than I expected. Mornings in early April felt crisp enough for a jacket, but later in the day it often turned warm and very comfortable for walking around without one. On some days, it already felt almost like summer, just without its heaviness.

me with umbrella by the Douro waterfront in Porto, a beautiful European city to visit in Аpril

That made a big difference for the whole trip because Porto and the surrounding area are much easier to enjoy when you can be outside for long stretches without getting soaked (like in winter) or overheated (like from the second part of May to September). It was easy to walk around the city, go on tours, spend time by the ocean, and also use Porto as a base for seeing more of the region.

We rented a car and explored beyond the city too, which I think works really well in April. Compared to summer, prices were so low (we paid €20 for 4 days for a car rental (!) from a trusted company Centauro, booked through Discovercars). Our guesthouse (a bit far from the center, but near the metro) cost us less than €70 per night which is considered affordable for this time of the year.

So in my experience, Porto is a nice European city break in April because everything works well during this time – excellent weather, still manageable crowds, lots of sun, and ability to combine city time with the ocean and historical towns nearby.

Where to stay in Porto in April (my picks)

For this trip, I’d stay in Baixa / historic center, not too far from São Bento. I also stayed in Paranhos, a more local residential part of Porto close to the metro, and loved it too. The only thing I’d recommend – do not focus too much on Ribeira – it is beautiful, but so busy and noisy.

  • PortoBay Flores – the nicest option here, in a very central location with a spa and small indoor pool
  • Hotel Porto Nobre – cheap simple stay in Paranhos, residential part of town
  • Exe Almada Porto – a good middle-ground option in the center, but not overly expensive

Nice (Plus French Riviera before it gets too crowded)

Nice is a great April getaway in Europe that is so elegant, inspirational, and easy to explore. April is one of those months when the Riviera starts waking up properly, but it still doesn’t feel as overwhelming (or as expensive) as peak summer.

What I like about Nice in April is that it works on multiple levels. You can use it as a city break and stay only in Nice while having enough to do – enjoy the sea, old town, markets, long walks with museums, and of course cafe time.

palm lined seafront on the French Riviera in Аpril
sunset over a glamorous French Riviera bay, a beautiful Europe trip in Аpril

Another option is to fly here to use it as a base for short trips along the coast – see Nice quickly, then hop on a bus (or rent a car) to explore nearby Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and in between them.

April is also a comfortable time for walking and exploring compared to hotter months. I’d still pack layers because evenings are cooler and spring weather is a mixed bag.

So if you want a classy trip somewhere in Europe in April, while being in one of the most beautiful spots on the French Mediterranean coast, then consider Nice. Another advantage of coming here is accessibility (it is well connected with many cities in Europe. Flying here from the US or Canada is easy too).

Where to stay in Nice in April (my picks)

Stay in a central location in Nice – it makes the trip much easier and lets you enjoy it properly without wasting time on transport or taxi (which is pricey here).

  • La Maïoun Guesthouse – hostel-style accommodation (women-only rooms available), closer to the sea
  • Place Du Pin – comfortable central 3-star option, good base for a city break on a mid-budget
  • Palais Saleya – excellent Old Town location, best atmosphere right outside your door
